What Is Cai Guan
Officer is the foundation of standing, Wealth is the source of life — Cai Guan is the first place you look in any chart
The Cai Guan method comes from the core tradition of Ziping Bazi. The Yuanhai Ziping states: 'The Ziping method focuses on Cai Guan above all.' The Sanming Tonghui says: 'When reading a chart, first check whether the month branch contains Cai or Guan.' In the Bazi system, the Pattern (格局, Geju) method covers less than 20% of charts — the remaining 80%+ of ordinary charts rely on the Cai Guan method. This method judges a person's wealth level, career standing, and social achievement by evaluating whether the Wealth star and Officer star are genuine or fake, strong or weak, and whether they are friendly or hostile toward the Day Master. This category organizes the core logic of the Cai Guan method — from distinguishing genuine from fake, to judging affinity vs. hostility, from dedicated Wealth star analysis to Officer star analysis, and finally to Cai-Guan interaction and luck cycle timing.
Three questions of the Cai Guan method: ① Is the Wealth/Officer genuine or fake? ② Is it friendly (有情, youqing) or hostile (无情, wuqing) to the Day Master? ③ What's the power tier (Wealth treated as Wealth → Output treated as Wealth → Officer/Killing treated as Wealth → Companion treated as Wealth — tier goes up). Genuine vs. fake determines whether it exists. Friendly vs. hostile determines whether you get it. Tier determines its size.
The Three Core Questions of the Cai Guan Method
Career & Wealth
The Cai Guan method is the first tool for judging career and wealth. Genuine Wealth and genuine Officer that are friendly to the Day Master guarantee at least modest prosperity. Wealth-acquisition paths have four tiers — Wealth treated as Wealth (salary), Output treated as Wealth (technical/business), Officer/Killing treated as Wealth (management/decision-making), Companion treated as Wealth (capacity-driven). The Officer star's prestige comes from being clear, rooted, and friendly to the Day Master. Officer-Resource mutual generation and Eating God controlling Seven Killings are both classic prestige paths.
Love & Relationship
The Wealth star and Officer star correspond to the spouse stars for men and women respectively. For men, Direct Wealth (正财, Zheng Cai) is the wife and Indirect Wealth (偏财, Pian Cai) represents lovers. For women, Direct Officer (正官, Zheng Guan) is the husband and Seven Killings (七杀, Qi Sha) represents secondary partners. Whether Cai Guan is friendly or hostile directly affects marriage quality — friendly means mutual harmony and support; injured or stolen Cai Guan means relationship turbulence. Genuine vs. fake also affects the spouse's actual qualifications and social standing.
Personality
Cai Guan configuration deeply shapes social personality. Strong Wealth star: pragmatic, profit-conscious, good at managing operations. Strong Officer star: responsible, respects rules and reputation. Both stars well-configured: pragmatic with vision — can make money and follow the rules. When Cai Guan is hostile to the Day Master: overly mercenary (excess Wealth) or overly repressed (excess Officer).
Health
Excess Wealth without control leads to health burnout from chasing money — over-socializing, irregular lifestyle. Excess Officer suppressing the Day Master creates mental stress, anxiety, and insomnia. Balanced Cai Guan friendly to the Day Master produces a steady life rhythm — knowing when to push hard and when to rest.

Study Recommendations
- Distinguish genuine from fake first, then judge affinity : The first step of the Cai Guan method is always to determine whether the Cai Guan is genuine. Only genuine Cai Guan are worth discussing. Fake Cai Guan look good on the surface but are useless. Genuine vs. fake is about root energy — check whether a Heavenly Stem revelation has root or qi in the Earthly Branches, and whether that root is clashed or controlled.
- Cai Guan is a ladder, not the destination : Cai Guan tells you how high a person can climb, but the climb still needs luck cycles and annual stars to cooperate. Having genuine Cai Guan in the natal chart is great capital, but without the right luck cycle, it still won't materialize.
- Use the Pattern method and Cai Guan method together : For those who form patterns and structures: Pattern method is primary, Cai Guan method supplementary. For those who don't: Cai Guan method is primary. Combining both gives the complete picture of a chart.
Common Follow-ups
Q: Is the Cai Guan method the same as the strength-balance method?
A:
No. The strength-balance method centers on the Day Master, pursuing balance between the Day Master and external forces. The Cai Guan method centers on Cai and Guan, focusing on their relationship to the Day Master — whether they gravitate toward or away from it. The Cai Guan method is the older tradition; strength-balancing came later. Their reference points are completely different.
Q: If a chart has no Wealth star or no Officer star, does that mean poverty or low status?
A:
Not necessarily. Someone with no Wealth star in the four pillars can still make money if the luck cycle brings Wealth. Output-treated-as-Wealth, Officer-treated-as-Wealth, and Companion-treated-as-Wealth are all alternative wealth paths. A chart without Officer can still achieve social standing if it forms a pattern (e.g., Hurting Officer matched with Resource).
Q: Does the Cai Guan method work for everyone's chart?
A:
The Cai Guan method is best suited for ordinary charts that don't form patterns — which is over 80% of all charts. For charts that do form patterns, use the Pattern method as primary and Cai Guan as a supplement. The two methods together give the widest coverage.
