Guardian Hills — Surrounding Hill Fortune Assessment: Sha Classification, Height and Distance Judgment, Shape Quality, and Urban Guardian Hills (Building Arrangement and Height)

Guardian hills (sha) are the hills surrounding the energy cavity. Four classifications — official sha, ghost sha, music sha, and radiant sha — each with distinct functions. High sha suppresses the master (too-tall sha steals the master's energy), low sha fails to guard (too-short sha cannot protect). Pointed sha (literary brush/martial brush), round sha (metal/earth sha), square sha (seal sha), and crooked sha (broken sha) — quality assessment. Urban guardian hills — what surrounding building heights, arrangements, and shapes represent.

The dragon delivers your energy. The guardian hills block the wind for you. The hills to the left and right of your cavity — they are your left and right arms. Good guardian hills — you sit steady. Bad guardian hills — you cannot sit still.

You found the dragon. You fixed the cavity. Now check the guardian hills. What are guardian hills? They are the circle of hills around your cavity. Left — Azure Dragon. Right — White Tiger. Front — Vermilion Bird. Back — Black Tortoise. Plus the various small hills farther out — all are guardian hills. The guardian hills block the wind, gather the energy, and protect the master. Good guardian hills — living in the cavity feels like sitting in an armchair. Bad guardian hills — you sit in a wind tunnel.

In feng shui, the relationship between guardian hills and the dragon works like this: the dragon delivers your takeout. The guardian hills block the door so no one comes in. The dragon sends life energy to the cavity. The guardian hills stop the energy-scattering wind from blowing it away. That is why they are also called protective sha — hills that protect the cavity. Assessing guardian hills is simpler than assessing dragons. Guardian hills are stationary. They do not move. You stand at the cavity and look around — all the hills and buildings you see are guardian hills. This guide covers four things. First — classification. Official sha, ghost sha, music sha, and radiant sha — what each governs. Second — height and distance. Too-tall sha suppresses you. Too-short sha fails to protect you. Too-close sha crowds you. Too-far sha does nothing. Third — shape. Pointed, round, square, crooked — what each gives you. Fourth — urban guardian hills. No mountains — the surrounding buildings are your guardian hills.

1. Four Types of Guardian Hills — Official, Ghost, Music, and Radiant. Missing Any One Is Not Good.

Official sha — the guardian hill directly in front. Also called the desk mountain. Directly ahead of your cavity should sit a low hill. Not far. Within a few hundred meters. Like the desk in front of your office table — hence desk mountain. Official sha must not be too tall. Too tall blocks your Bright Hall. Ideal official sha: flat top, spreading left and right, like an open case file. Living behind such a house — your work is steady. Leaders value you. A pointed official sha — literary brush peak. Your household produces scholars or civil officials. A round official sha — good wealth fortune. Missing official sha — directly ahead is empty. No end in sight. Energy has nothing to close it. Your future is visible all the way to the end. Ghost sha — the guardian hill directly behind. The backing mountain behind the cavity. Ghost does not mean haunting. Ghost means returning — the dragon returns from behind, reaches your cavity, and stops. Ghost sha is the dragon's back. Ghost sha should be tall — but not too tall. Too tall is called suppressing the master. Too short is called having no backing. Ideal ghost sha: about a head taller than the cavity position, vegetated, rounded. Living behind such a house — you have backing. Someone catches you when you fall. Missing ghost sha — you have no support behind you. You have ability but no one appreciates you. Or you help others — and they do not help you back. Music sha — the guardian hills left and right. Left is Azure Dragon sha. Right is White Tiger sha. The two should be symmetrical. Similar height. Similar distance. Similar form. Azure Dragon can be slightly taller (traditional male-left, female-right — Azure Dragon governs male, White Tiger governs female — but this is not absolute). Music sha governs helpers. Symmetrical music sha — you have benefactors in work and life. Left and right arms. One tall and one short — your team is unbalanced. One side strong, one side weak. White Tiger significantly taller than Azure Dragon — the woman in the household is dominant (not necessarily bad — but family roles may invert). Radiant sha — outer perimeter hills in the distance. The peaks beyond the dragon and tiger. Radiant means shining — distant hills that reflect light or have prominent forms. Radiant sha governs fame. Good radiant sha — you have recognition in your industry. Pointed radiant sha — you are known for outstanding individual ability. Round radiant sha — you are known for interpersonal connections. Square radiant sha — you are known for institutional position.

2. Guardian Hill Height and Distance — Too Tall Suppresses, Too Short Is Useless, Too Close Crowds, Too Far Is Empty Promise

Judging guardian hills is not just about shape. Two parameters matter equally: height and distance. High sha suppresses the master: a guardian hill around you significantly taller than your building. A building, a hill, or a tower. You live inside — suppressed. Not literally. At the energy level — your energy gets siphoned by that tall sha. Tall over short — the tall one captures the energy. The short one gets drained. You live next to a tall sha — your vitality gets drained. Symptoms: easily tired, easily bossed around, unequal relationship with superiors at work — always you compromising. Remedy: add upward elements in your room — tall cabinets, pendant lights, paintings hung high. Pull the indoor energy upward. Low sha fails to guard: the guardian hills around you are too short. They cannot protect you. Wind blows — your energy scatters. Living surrounded by low sha — your social network is weak. Many friends, but few help. Drinking buddies at ordinary times — when something happens, the phone goes unanswered. Remedy: keep many green plants in your room. Green plants equal your artificial guardian hills. Surrounding you. Protecting you. Close sha crowds you: outside your window or balcony, a mountain or building presses right up close. Almost touchable. This is called crowding. Overly close sha does not guard you — it threatens you. Living in such a home — a psychological sense of oppression. Remedy: install frosted glass or blinds. Blur the crowding sensation of the sha. Or place a row of small plants on the windowsill — create a buffer zone. Distant sha is empty promise: sha sits far, far away. Blurry. Visible but unreachable. This kind of sha governs long-term opportunity — but not now. For example — a distant pointed peak among your distant sha. Your child may become a top student. But your own life is what it is.

3. Guardian Hill Shapes — What Pointed Gives You, What Round Gives You, What Square Gives You, What Crooked Destroys

Guardian hill shape is the first thing a feng shui master reads to judge fortune. Pointed sha — like a brush tip. Triangular peaks or building tops. Divided into literary brush (slender, gentle) and martial brush (thick, sharp). Literary brush in Xun position (southeast) — the household produces scholars. Literary brush in Li position (south) — produces civil officials. Martial brush in Qian position (northwest) — produces military leaders or managers. Single pointed sha equals a lone peak. Special talent but solitary. Multiple pointed sha equals a cluster of peaks. Team-collaboration success. Round sha — like a steamed bun. Rounded hills or building domes. Belonging to metal or earth (check color — white equals metal, yellow equals earth). Round sha governs money. Metal-round directly governs money. Earth-round governs accumulation. Round sha around you — your wealth fortune is not bad. Round sha in which direction — wealth fortune is good for the family member corresponding to that direction. Square sha — like a seal. Perfectly square hills or buildings. Square sha governs power. Square sha directly in front — you have official fortune. You belong in the system. Square sha in the northwest (Qian position) — most powerful. Square sha in other positions — power weakens but still exists. Crooked sha — twisted, slanted, notched. Charging at you, stabbing at you. All irregular forms of sha equal affliction. Sharp corner charging at you — illness. Slanted corner charging at you — wealth breakage. No crooked sha is good. Remedy: plant trees to block. Or hang thick curtains on the window.

4. Urban Guardian Hills — The Buildings Around You Are Your Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise

Cities have no mountains. But buildings are mountains. Your building equals the cavity. Surrounding buildings equal the guardian hills. The building directly ahead equals official sha / Vermilion Bird. The building directly behind equals ghost sha / Black Tortoise. The building clusters on the left equal Azure Dragon sha. The building clusters on the right equal White Tiger sha. Distant landmark buildings equal radiant sha. Urban sha follows the same assessment standards — height, distance, shape. Tall urban sha suppresses: surrounding buildings notably taller than yours. You are suppressed. Living in a low-rise complex surrounded by high-rises — your energy gets siphoned by the surrounding towers. Remedy: hang wind chimes along the outer edge of your balcony — the sound waves rise to higher levels. They carry your energy upward. Do not aim at any specific tall building — wind chimes do not attract affliction. They only lift energy. Low urban sha fails to guard: surrounding buildings are too short. Or your building is the tallest in the complex. You have no guardian sha to protect you. Wind blows and you scatter. Symptom: loneliness. You carry everything alone. Remedy: keep many green plants indoors. Create your own guardian sha. Close urban sha crowds you: less than ten meters outside your window is the facing building's wall. Light blocked. Ventilation blocked. This is called crowding. Remedy: blinds — adjust the slat angle to let light in while blocking the sightline. Close sha in which direction — the corresponding body part in that direction is prone to problems. South crowding — heart and eyes. West crowding — lungs and breathing. North crowding — kidneys and urinary system. East crowding — liver and sinews. Distant urban sha is empty promise: you can see distant tall buildings or a TV tower. Nice view. But it has nothing to do with you. This is your vision sha. Distant sha in an auspicious direction (your Sheng Qi or Yan Nian) — your vision can materialize. In an inauspicious direction (your Jue Ming or Wu Gui) — your vision stays forever on the road.

5. Azure Dragon and White Tiger Balance — Left and Right. What If They Are Not the Same Height?

Azure Dragon (left) and White Tiger (right) are the guardian hills that most directly affect you. They are like the two armrests of your chair. Same-height armrests — you sit steady. One high and one low — your body tilts. Azure Dragon taller — auspicious. Azure Dragon governs career. Dragon high and tiger low — career outweighs disputes. You get help in your work. Few people sabotage you. Azure Dragon can be slightly taller — but not excessively. Too much becomes Azure Dragon suppressing the master — left side too strong. You become a workaholic. Family life becomes unbalanced. White Tiger taller — pay attention. White Tiger governs disputes and gossip. Tiger high and dragon low — petty people surround you. You get stabbed in the back at work. Women dominate the household (not necessarily bad — but if you are male and unaccustomed to it, you will feel off-balance). Remedy for tall White Tiger: add tall objects on the Azure Dragon side (your left side inside the home) — a bookshelf, tall cabinet, tall plant. Raise the Azure Dragon position. Physically level it out. But not all tall White Tigers are inauspicious. If the White Tiger sha is round and well-formed — White Tiger is tall but is a metal round sha — it actually boosts the household women's wealth fortune. Shape matters most. White Tiger is not dirty — it is sharp. Handle it well and White Tiger becomes your wealth assistant. Azure Dragon and White Tiger too close: the buildings left and right are both extremely close. You are sandwiched. This is called clamping. When clamped, your energy gets split between the two flanking buildings. You become the filling in a sandwich. Remedy: place one plant on each side of your balcony — as a buffer. The plants absorb some energy from the left and right buildings — you are no longer under direct flanking attack.

Multi-Dimensional Breakdown

Career & Wealth

Official sha (directly ahead) directly governs career. Flat-topped official sha — your position in the company is stable. Pointed official sha — you stand out by skill. Round official sha — you advance by relationships. Square official sha — you hold an institutional position. Missing official sha — you either start your own business or always feel one position short. Music sha (left and right) governs your team. Symmetrical — your subordinates or colleagues are reliable. Asymmetrical — your team is unbalanced. Radiant sha governs fame and recognition — distant pointed sha equals industry recognition. Round sha equals public recognition. Square sha equals official recognition.

Love & Relationship

Azure Dragon-White Tiger balance directly governs marital relations. Azure Dragon taller — male leads the household. White Tiger taller — female leads the household. Who leads is not the issue — balance is. If Azure Dragon is excessively tall and White Tiger excessively short — male chauvinism, female resentment. If White Tiger is excessively tall and Azure Dragon excessively short — female dominance, male confidence crushed. The remedy is not to pursue a male-must-be-taller-on-the-left setup. It is to ensure both sha forms are beautiful — rounded, vegetated, not crowding. Good form but uneven height — adjust indoors. Add a tall cabinet or plant on the shorter side.

Practical Steps

  • 360-Degree Guardian Hill Inspection from Your Balcony — Ten Minutes for a Conclusion: ① Phone compass — stand on your balcony or at the window. ② Face directly ahead (your home's facing direction) — what do you see? Record height, distance, shape. ③ Face left (Azure Dragon) — record. ④ Face right (White Tiger) — record. ⑤ Turn to face directly behind (Black Tortoise) — record. ⑥ After recording all four directions, compare with this guide. ⑦ Score each direction: height (suitable = ✓, too tall = ✗, too short = △). Distance (suitable = ✓, too close = ✗, too far = △). Shape (round/square = ✓, pointed = depends, crooked/slanted = ✗). ⑧ Overall: all four directions ✓ — your guardian hills are full marks. Fewer than two ✓ — your guardian hills have problems. ⑨ For problem directions — check the corresponding remedies in this guide. ⑩ Re-inspect every three months — neighbor renovations or new construction can change guardian hills.
  • Four Quick Urban Guardian Hill Adjustments — Small Cost to Protect Your Azure Dragon and White Tiger: White Tiger taller than Azure Dragon — place a tall plant on the left balcony (happy tree or money tree, 1.5 meters or taller). Add a tall bookshelf (1.8 meters or taller) on the left Azure Dragon side. High sha suppressing — hang a string of metal wind chimes along the outer balcony edge (sound rises upward with energy). Apply semi-transparent window film (reduces visual oppression). Close sha crowding — place a row of succulents or small plants along the windowsill (buffer zone). Hang sheer curtains on the inside of the window — not to fully block, but to soften. Missing sha (one direction has no building) — hang a painting of the corresponding spirit beast on the wall in that direction. Missing east Azure Dragon — hang a dragon painting (green). Missing west White Tiger — hang a tiger painting (white). Missing south Vermilion Bird — hang a phoenix painting (red). Missing north Black Tortoise — hang a tortoise-snake painting (black). The painting must have quality — cheap prints do not work.

Common Questions

Q:I live in a high-rise. There is a building on the left but empty sky on the right — the White Tiger position is completely vacant. What do I do?

A:

Vacant right equals White Tiger position leaking energy. Symptom: colleagues at work easily steal your credit. Your achievements get taken by others. Remedy: indoors on your right side (White Tiger position) — near the window — place a white metal ornament. White equals metal equals White Tiger. Metal equals White Tiger. A clock also works (clock equals metal). Or place a white cabinet. Or in this position — hang a white wind chime. When the chime rings, the sound waves fill the White Tiger void with energy. Not a literal fill — but the sound waves create a dynamic virtual sha in the White Tiger position.

Q:There is a TV tower in the distance — pointed sha in the distant radiant position. Good or bad?

A:

A TV tower is a pointed sha plus metal material. Metal plus pointed equals double sharpness. If the TV tower sits in your auspicious direction (Sheng Qi or Yan Nian) — your fame and influence get amplified by this pointed sha. Good. Your voice in the industry grows louder. If the TV tower sits in your inauspicious direction (Jue Ming or Wu Gui) — your reputation gets severed. Negative press. Or you become known but for the wrong reasons. A pointed sha in the radiant position is not inherently bad — the condition is whether it sits in an auspicious direction. Assessment method: point your compass at the TV tower direction. Check which trigram of your house it falls under. Auspicious — keep it. Inauspicious — hang thick curtains to block. Or apply semi-transparent window film — not fully blocking, but softening the sharp visual.
