Mangpai on Following Patterns: Skip the Follow-or-Not Debate — Use Work and Image to Read Wealth and Rank Directly

Mangpai doesn't use following-pattern theory. It judges extremely weak or strong charts through work and image. Compare the pattern school, the new school, and mangpai positions. The historical roots of the following-pattern debate.

Mangpai on Following Patterns: Skip the Follow-or-Not Debate — Use Work and Image to Read Wealth and Rank Directly

Following patterns are the biggest controversy in bazi. Mangpai just walks around it.

Following patterns are probably the single most disputed concept in bazi. One school says follow. Another says don't. What does mangpai do? It doesn't discuss follow or not-follow. It looks directly at work and image. Has work and has image — who cares what it's following. Wealth and rank can be read. No work and no image — follow it to the moon and it's still an empty frame.

Mangpai doesn't do following patterns. It only recognizes one precondition: no root energy, no Seal-Friend support. Then it reads work and image. Has work and has image: wealth-rank readable. No work and no image: even a perfect follow produces no big wealth. The schools disagree because they disagree on what balance means.

1. The mangpai position: no following patterns

Mangpai doesn't use day-master strength to read charts. So the logic of 'body so weak at the extreme it must follow' simply doesn't exist in the mangpai framework. Mangpai only checks one precondition: the day master has no root energy and no Seal-Friend support. If this holds, it means 'I can't stand on my own. I have no squad.' Then it doesn't debate follow or not. It looks directly at: do other characters in the chart do work? Has any element formed momentum and is that momentum doing effective work? Has work, has image — wealthy and ranked. No work, no image — mediocre. The mangpai line: 'Someone without their own squad — watch who's using them and how they're being used.'

2. How different schools treat following patterns

The Pattern School only accepts four weak-follow types: follow Wealth, follow Child, follow Killing, follow Momentum. They reject strong-follow. The New School and folk schools flatly reject all following patterns — they say there's only extreme strength and extreme weakness. The follow concept is歪理. Mangpai is ambiguous but operationally bypasses the issue entirely — it only uses 'no root energy, no Seal-Friend support' as the precondition. Then it skips the follow-or-not debate and reads work and image directly to reach conclusions.

3. The historical roots of following patterns

Following patterns first appeared in Yuanhai Ziping (Song Dynasty). The core idea traces to Laozi: 'Reversal is the movement of the Dao. Weakness is the function of the Dao.' — things reverse at the extreme. Extreme weakness paradoxically carries force. The following-pattern debate has raged for centuries because the judgment standard is fuzzy. When does it follow? When doesn't it? What if the Luck Pillar arrives in the opposite direction? No settled answer. Mangpai uses work and image methods to walk around the whole thing — no entanglement with the philosophical definition of following. Look directly at actual results.

4. Mangpai's practical replacement approach

Facing a chart with an extremely weak, rootless day master, mangpai takes three steps. Step one: identify which force is strongest in the chart. Step two: check whether this momentum is doing work — can it suppress Wealth and Officer? Can it transform Wealth and Officer? Step three: read image — stem-branch combinations, palace positions, Ten God information. Example: a chart with a rootless day master but the whole chart is Wood-Fire bright-through. Traditional says follow-momentum pattern or follow-child pattern. Mangpai skips the debate — Wood-Fire bright-through is itself work (Wood generates Fire, energy releases). Bright-through undamaged equals good pattern. Same conclusion. Completely different analytical path.

5. The real question behind following patterns

The following-pattern controversy has lasted centuries for one reason: the strength-weakness balance framework is itself limited. Strength and weakness form a continuous spectrum. Following patterns try to draw a line at the extreme — but each school draws it differently. Mangpai can bypass the issue because it completely abandoned the strength-weakness framework and adopted two new coordinates: work and image. Judge whether a chart is good not by whether it's balanced — but by whether it's effective. Does the energy have an effective release valve?

Dimensions

Career & Wealth

Rootless day master but the chart has work — still capable of wealth and rank. But dependent on the external environment. Rooted day master with work — self-sustaining. Rootless day master with no work — drifting with the current.

Love & Relationship

Rootless day master people tend to be rootless in relationships too — dependent on the partner for security. Choosing a partner with a stable root (day sits on Salary, or day branch generates-supports the day stem) patches your own weak point.

Personality

Rootless day master people tend toward self-doubt, dependence on external validation, and shaky positions. Nothing to do with following patterns — they simply lack their own foundation. Finding a field where they can plant their feet is their real day-master root.

Health

Rootless day master people have lower baseline energy. Fatigue comes easily. They need regular sleep schedules, fixed exercise habits, and stable relationships as an acquired root to compensate for the先天 deficiency.

Practical Application

  • Skip the follow judgment. Read momentum and work directly. : Facing a rootless day-master chart, don't agonize over what it follows. Find the globally strongest faction. Check whether it's actively doing something — suppressing Wealth and Officer, generating Wealth and Officer, transforming Killing. Yes = good chart. No = ordinary.
  • Check if the Luck Pillar follows the current : Rootless day-master charts most fear Luck Pillars that walk Seal-Friend direction — looks like body-support but actually triggers independence urges without enough foundation. Internal friction instead. Luck Pillars that follow the chart's dominant five-element direction are the smoothest.
  • Find the acquired root : Rootless day-master people need rooting life structures — a stable career path, a fixed daily rhythm, reliable partners. These are patches on the chart. They can't rewrite the script. But they can optimize the performance.

Common Questions

Q: Do following patterns actually exist?

A:

Debated for centuries. No standard answer. Mangpai's handling is the most practical: don't care about follow or not. Don't tangle with names. Read the chart's work and image directly. Results matter more than definitions. Can you read it accurately? That's what counts.

Q: If the day master is extremely strong, does it also need to follow?

A:

Traditional following patterns only accept weak-follow, not strong-follow. Mangpai doesn't tangle with this — an extremely strong day master just means formed momentum. Formed momentum must be checked for a work release valve. No valve is worse than a rootless day master — massive force with nowhere to go. Pressure builds into internal damage.
