Pattern Formation and Pattern Breakage in Chinese Metaphysics — Methods for Judging Pattern Stability

Patterns can be formed or broken. Formation unleashes potential; breakage shakes the foundation. This article systematically explains the conditions for pattern formation, the signals of pattern breakage, and remedial methods after breakage.

Formation and Breakage: Two States of Patterns

Patterns are not unchanging — formation has a path; breakage has a cause

Pattern formation is the ideal state — the pattern's core Ten God is unharmed, the yongshen is effective, and the structure is complete. Pattern breakage is the damaged state — the pattern's core Ten God is restrained or combined/transformed, the yongshen fails, and the structure shows cracks. Learning to judge formation conditions and breakage signals is foundational skill in pattern-based chart reading. This article systematically explains the judgment methods and practical responses for both.

Formation looks at three things: whether the core Ten God is injured, whether the yongshen is affectionate and powerful, whether the structure is complete. Breakage also looks at three things: restraint-breakage, combination-breakage, mixing-breakage.

1. Conditions for Pattern Formation: Prerequisites for Pattern Potential

For a pattern to truly 'form' (able to express pattern potential), three conditions must be met. First, the pattern's core Ten God is unharmed — Direct Officer pattern's Officer star is not restrained by Hurting Officer; Wealth pattern's Wealth star is not restrained by Companion; Resource pattern's Resource star is not restrained by Wealth star. The core Ten God is the soul of the pattern; when it's harmed, the entire pattern shifts from formation toward breakage. Second, the yongshen is affectionate and powerful — the yongshen has roots in the earthly branches, forms a benign interaction with the Day Master, and is not restrained or combined/transformed by other Ten Gods. The yongshen's 'affection' is the key variable for how far the pattern can express. Third, the pattern structure is complete — the Eight Standard Patterns' Ten God configuration doesn't lack key roles. For example, Hurting Officer pattern ideally pairs with Resource (Hurting Officer paired with Resource) or with Wealth (Hurting Officer generates Wealth); patterns with coordination perform better than isolated ones. Formation is the pattern's 'factory optimal state' — in this state, the pattern's potential can be fully released.

2. Three Ways Patterns Break: Restraint-Breakage, Combination-Breakage, Mixing-Breakage

There are three classic ways patterns break. First type: restraint-breakage — the pattern's core Ten God is directly restrained by another Ten God. Direct Officer pattern's Officer star restrained by Hurting Officer (Hurting Officer confronts Officer) — this is the most classic restraint-breakage. Wealth pattern's Wealth star restrained by Companion (Companion seizes Wealth) — Wealth pattern broken, wealth luck heavily discounted. Resource pattern's Resource star restrained by Wealth star (Wealth breaks Resource) — academic or benefactor luck obstructed. Restraint-breakage is the most destructive breakage method because it's direct confrontation. Second type: combination-breakage — the pattern's core Ten God is combined/transformed by another Ten God and loses its original function. Officer star combined by Output (Output combines with Officer); Wealth star combined by Companion (Companion combines with Wealth). Combination-breakage's destructiveness is milder than restraint-breakage — the core Ten God is still present, but 'tied up,' unable to function. Third type: mixing-breakage — the pattern's core Ten God is 'mixed' — Direct Officer and Seven Killings appear simultaneously (Officer-Killing mixing); Direct Wealth and Indirect Wealth have comparable strength with indistinguishable priority. Mixing-breakage makes the pattern lose purity; the yongshen vacillates between two Ten Gods.

3. Judging Breakage Severity: Mild Breakage vs. Severe Breakage

Breakage is not all-or-nothing — there's a spectrum from mild to severe. Mild breakage: the breakage Ten God itself is weak and rootless, or there is rescue. For example, Direct Officer pattern's Officer star is restrained by Hurting Officer, but the Hurting Officer itself is rootless (floating) — restraining power is limited — this is mild restraint-breakage. Or the Officer star is restrained by Hurting Officer, but a Resource star nearby protects the Officer (Resource controls Hurting Officer, protecting the Officer) — breakage with rescue; destructive force is buffered. Severe breakage: the breakage Ten God is powerful with roots, and there is no rescue. The Officer star is restrained by a Hurting Officer with strong roots in close adjacency, and the overall chart has no Resource star for rescue — Officer pattern severely broken; pattern function is greatly damaged. In practice, judging breakage severity: look at the breakage Ten God's root qi (rooted or rootless), look at whether there is rescue (rescued or not), look at the breakage Ten God's position (adjacent or separated). Comprehensively evaluate breakage severity from these three factors.

4. Post-Breakage Remedies and Pattern Repair

A broken pattern doesn't mean everything is ruined — breakage can be remedied. Luck cycles are the best remedial force. If the Direct Officer pattern's natal chart has the Officer star restrained by Hurting Officer (broken), and the luck cycle enters Resource cycles (Resource controls Hurting Officer, protecting the Officer), the breakage is repaired during that luck cycle step. If the luck cycle enters Wealth cycles (Wealth bridges — Hurting Officer generates Wealth, Wealth generates Officer), it can also indirectly repair the breakage. The chart owner's own choices can also remedy the pattern — knowing the pattern's breakage factors, one can consciously avoid them in real life. A person whose Officer star is broken by Hurting Officer should avoid work requiring 'maverick independence' (the nature of Hurting Officer) and choose environments with frameworks and systems (the nature of Officer star) — this is a practical remedy for breakage. The ultimate purpose of pattern-based chart reading is not sticking labels, but helping people understand their structural advantages and risks, and make wiser choices.

Practical Key Points

  • Formation looks at three elements : Core Ten God unrestrained, yongshen affectionate and powerful, structure complete — all three conditions met = formed pattern. One missing = pattern discounted; two missing = pattern unstable.
  • Breakage is graded by severity : Breakage Ten God rootless or with rescue = mild breakage. Rooted, powerful, and without rescue = severe breakage. Distinguish severity to give clients accurate risk warnings.
  • Luck cycles are the best repair tool : Natal chart breakage can be supplemented by luck cycles — when entering rescue luck cycles, the pattern is repaired. Tell the client which luck cycles are repair periods and which require attention to breakage risk.

Common Follow-up Questions

Q: Can a pattern that has been broken re-form?

A:

Yes. When luck cycles reach rescue cycles, the breakage damage is repaired, and the pattern re-forms. Once the luck cycle passes, breakage factors may re-emerge. Patterns switching between formation and breakage is the norm in chart reading, not an unchanging state.

Q: Do all patterns have the possibility of breaking?

A:

Theoretically, yes. But some patterns are inherently more stable (e.g., Resource patterns and Wealth patterns are relatively stable), while some are inherently more prone to breaking (e.g., Hurting Officer patterns and Seven Killings patterns are more sensitive). Pattern stability relates to pattern type and also to the chart's specific configuration.
