The Limits of Wangshuai
Wangshuai is not a universal tool — you have to know its boundaries to use it well
Wangshuai (strength-balancing method, also called fuyi method) is the foundational tool in Bazi reading — but it has clear limits. Limit one: it handles special patterns (Following patterns, Monopolistic patterns) backwards — if you misdiagnose one as a normal pattern, the yongshen selection goes completely the wrong way. Limit two: it only considers force balance, not temperature (tiaohou) or circulation (tongguan). A perfect wangshuai analysis can be completely wrong because it ignored climate. Limit three: within the same strength tier, wangshuai lacks precision — 'slightly strong +1' and 'slightly strong +9' both get the same 'restrain or drain' strategy, but they feel completely different. Limit four: wangshuai is Day-Master-centric to a fault — but other Ten Gods can also reach extreme strength, and those extremes matter too.
Wangshuai's four blind spots: ① Fails on special patterns (strategy inverts). ② Ignores tiaohou and tongguan (missing a dimension). ③ Too coarse within tiers (+1 and +9 get the same fix). ④ Day-Master-obsessed — other stars can be extreme too.
1. Patch one: check for special patterns first
2. Patch two: always layer tiaohou on top of wangshuai
3. Patch three and four: multi-center, multi-dimensional judgment
Judgment Dimensions
Career & Wealth
Special-pattern misdiagnosis can send career advice completely backwards. A Following-Wealth pattern told to 'build strength first' will miss its natural advantage of riding the Wealth current. Tiaohou-blindness means recommending the wrong industry — a cold chart told to pursue Water careers (adding cold) when it actually needs Fire industries.
Love & Relationship
Wangshuai-only reading can miss relationship dynamics entirely. The spouse star may be the extreme element, not the Day Master. An extremely strong Officer star as the husband indicator means the relationship dynamic is driven by the spouse's overwhelming presence, not the Day Master's strength level.
Personality
Seven-tier strength assessment gives a rough personality profile, but the missing dimensions matter. A strong Day Master who is also tiaohou-deficient has a completely different feel from one with good climate — the first feels rigid and cold, the second feels robust and warm.
Health
Extreme elements other than the Day Master create their own health pressures. An extremely strong Officer star can cause chronic stress even when the Day Master is balanced. Multi-center assessment catches health risks that Day-Master-only wangshuai misses.

Practical Strategy
- Cross-validate with multiple methods: Wangshuai assessment + pattern assessment + tiaohou assessment — three dimensions, cross-validated. All three pointing the same way = high confidence. Three pointing different ways = need to weigh priorities.
- Wangshuai is the starting point, not the destination: Use wangshuai to establish the baseline strength profile. Then move to pattern method, tiaohou method, and tongguan method for detailed judgments. Wangshuai provides the frame. The other methods fill in the details.
Common Questions
Q:Does Blind School abandon wangshuai entirely?
A:
Not entirely. Blind School also considers strength but doesn't depend on it as heavily as the Wangshuai School. Blind School focuses more on Ten God gong-zuo and imagery — wangshuai is a supporting dimension, not the dominant one. Different schools have different dependency levels on strength assessment.
