Some Drawbacks of the Ziping Pattern School — Objectively Viewing the Limitations of the Pattern Method

While the pattern method is excellent, it also has its blind spots and limitations. This article analyzes common drawbacks of the pattern school from a methodological perspective, including over-reliance on the month branch, neglect of climate regulation, and the inadequacy of static pattern determination.

Limitations of the Pattern Method: A Worthwhile Methodological Reflection

The pattern method is a tool, and every tool has its applicable scope

The pattern method is the most systematic destiny-analysis framework in Ziping technique, but it also has its blind spots and limitations. Recognizing the drawbacks of the pattern method is not about negating it, but about using the right tool in the right context and not letting the pattern method's limitations mislead judgment. This article organizes the common problems of the pattern school from a methodological perspective.

The pattern method's greatest strength is systematicity; its greatest drawback is over-reliance on the 'month branch.' The month branch is important, but it's not everything in the chart. Making patterns absolute leads into a methodological dead end.

1. Over-Reliance on the Month Branch: The Month Branch Is Not the Entire Chart

The core logic of the pattern method is to determine the pattern starting from the month branch. This logic is effective in most cases, but there are times when it fails. The month branch is severely clashed and restrained — when the month-branch earthly branch is clashed (such as Yin month clashed by Shen), the month branch's power is greatly discounted, and the pattern label taken from the month branch at such times may deviate from the actual pattern structure. The month branch's hidden stems don't emerge — mixed-qi month branches (Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei) have multiple and complex hidden stems; without clear emerged stems and branch meetings, taking the primary qi as the pattern sometimes 'gets it wrong.' Other forces in the chart are stronger than the month branch — if the month branch is merely a 'nominal position' and the chart's real power lies elsewhere (such as the Wealth star forming dominance throughout the chart while the month branch is merely Companion), the pattern method's month-branch orientation may deviate from reality. Advanced users of the pattern method will adjust month-branch judgments by incorporating overall chart strength, but beginners of the pattern method often make the mistake of 'looking at the month branch without looking at the entire chart' — this is the risk inherent in the pattern method's own methodology.

2. Neglect of Climate Regulation and Strength/Weakness: Patterns Are Not the Only Dimension of Destiny Analysis

The pattern school historically had prolonged debates with the strength/weakness school — the pattern school believed 'patterns determine everything,' while the strength/weakness school believed 'strength and weakness are the foundation.' Looking back from today's perspective, both schools have their reasoning and both have blind spots. Blind spot one of the pattern method is its neglect of the climate regulation dimension — the pattern method discusses Ten God configuration and pattern purity/turbidity but rarely addresses issues of cold, warm, dry, and damp. A pure Direct Officer pattern, if born in an extremely cold winter month without Fire to regulate the climate, will have the pattern's expression severely limited by climate conditions. The pattern method cannot see this. Blind spot two of the pattern method is insufficient attention to the strength/weakness dimension — the pattern school selects the Useful God centered on the pattern, while the strength/weakness school selects the Useful God centered on the Day Master. When the pattern Use and strength/weakness Use conflict, the pattern school tends to maintain the pattern direction, but sometimes the Day Master is so weak it can't even sustain the pattern direction, making the pattern direction a castle in the air. The complete dimensions of destiny analysis are pattern + strength/weakness + climate regulation + work production — pattern is only one of them.

3. The Inadequacy of Static Pattern Determination: Patterns Change with Luck Cycles

One problem of the pattern school is the tendency to give 'static conclusions' — 'You are a Direct Officer pattern, your Useful God is Wealth and Seal.' This conclusion is correct at the natal chart level, but once luck cycles change, the pattern's actual expression can be completely different. Direct Officer pattern entering Hurting Officer cycle — the Officer star is restrained by Hurting Officer, the pattern shifts from 'established' to 'broken.' Direct Officer pattern entering Wealth cycle — Wealth generates Officer strengthening the pattern, the pattern becomes more stable. The same Direct Officer pattern expresses completely differently under different fortune periods. Beginners of the pattern school often stay in the static process of 'determine pattern → select Use → draw conclusion,' lacking dynamic awareness that 'patterns change with luck cycles.' Advanced pattern-based destiny analysts will, after static pattern determination, provide a 'dynamic assessment of luck cycle impact on the pattern' — which luck cycle steps keep the pattern stable, which steps challenge the pattern, which steps may cause structural changes in the pattern. This is what the pattern method should look like in real practice.

Practical Key Points

  • The pattern method determines direction; comprehensive judgment determines conclusions : Use the pattern method to determine the chart's structural direction, then use strength/weakness to verify capability foundations, and use climate regulation to judge environmental conditions. Only after cross-verifying across three dimensions should you draw conclusions.
  • The month branch is not the sole basis for pattern judgment : When the month branch is clashed/restrained, has no emerged stems, or the overall chart's force far exceeds the month branch, pattern judgment should reference the actual force distribution of the entire chart; don't let the month branch hijack the judgment.
  • Pattern conclusions must be dynamic : After determining the pattern, you must provide a pattern stability assessment across luck cycles. How the pattern performs under different luck cycles is what clients truly care about, not a static label.

Common Follow-ups

Q: Is the pattern method outdated?

A:

It's not outdated, but needs supplementation. The systematic framework provided by the pattern method is its irreplaceable value. But exclusively honoring patterns while rejecting strength/weakness, climate regulation, blind school, and other methods does make destiny analysis one-sided. The pattern method used in combination with other methods is the optimal choice for real practice.
