Strength isn't the only entrance — several paths get you to a reading without pinning down Strength first

There are several ways to reach a reading without first determining whether the Day Master is strong or weak. The Image Method (xiàng fǎ, 象法) — look at the picture formed by a Ten God combination and draw your conclusion directly. The Pattern Method (gé jú fǎ, 格局法) — judge whether a pattern (gé, 格) has formed or not; you don't need Strength as a prerequisite. Clash-Harmony-Combine direct reading — look at clashes (chōng, 冲) and combinations (hé, 合) hitting key palace positions and read the result straight. These paths don't replace Strength analysis — but they cover scenarios where you don't need a precise strategic answer.

Paths that skip Strength: Image Method (Ten God combinations form pictures → direct conclusions), Pattern Method (pattern formation → direct judgment), Clash-Harmony (impact on palace positions → direct reading). Fast, but doesn't give you precise strategy — detailed Strength analysis gives you action plans. Switch between the two depending on what's being asked.

1. Image Method — reading the picture a combination paints

The core idea: certain Ten God combinations form a complete picture by themselves. They don't need the Day Master's Strength as context. Common image combinations: Indirect Seal seizing Eating God (piān yìn duó shí shén, 枭神夺食) — creativity suppressed. Hurting Officer meeting Officer (shāng guān jiàn guān, 伤官见官) — conflict with authority and rules. Wealth star damaging Seal (cái xīng huài yìn, 财星坏印) — your protective layer gets compromised. You read these directly. The Image Method's strength is speed. Its weakness: it gives you a fuzzy direction, not a precise strategy. You know something's happening — but not what to do about it.

2. Pattern Method — reading based on whether a pattern holds

Pattern School's basic judgment doesn't need the Day Master's Strength as a precondition. Eating God controlling Killing (shí shén zhì shā, 食神制杀) forming a pattern = good structure. Hurting Officer paired with Seal (shāng guān pèi yìn, 伤官配印) forming a pattern = noble structure. You don't judge Strength first — the pattern's formation already embedded the Strength factor inside its logic. The Pattern Method's weakness: when a pattern doesn't fully form, you need Strength analysis to fill the gap. Pattern failed? Now Strength becomes the tiebreaker for understanding what actually happens.

3. Direct reading can't give strategic advice — that's its ceiling

Direct reading tells you what will happen. It doesn't tell you what to do about it. A weak Day Master gets hit by Wealth — how should they respond? The answer depends entirely on just how weak they are. Direct reading hands you the event. Strength analysis hands you the strategy. Best practice: use direct reading for a fast event-level conclusion, then layer on detailed Strength analysis for the response plan. Switch flexibly based on the question type — is this person asking 'will something happen' or 'how do I handle it'?

4. When Strength is mandatory — the line you don't cross

Skip Strength when the question is informational: 'What kind of year will this be?' or 'What does this combination mean?' Don't skip Strength when the question is strategic: 'Should I take this job?' 'How do I handle this relationship?' 'When should I push forward and when should I pull back?' Strategic questions demand you know the Day Master's capacity — and capacity is a Strength question, period. The person asking wants a playbook, not a weather report.

Don't force direct reading onto strategy questions: If someone asks for a life plan and you give them image-method surface reads, you've shortchanged them. Match the tool to the job — not the other way around.

Q:Is reading without Strength the same as the Blind School (máng pài, 盲派) approach?

The Blind School indeed doesn't emphasize Strength — they focus more on 'work function' (zuò gōng, 做功) and image reading. But they have their own complete system of judgment tools. It's not simply 'don't look at Strength' — they've replaced Strength with other metrics entirely. Different toolset, same goal.

Q:Can I build a full practice using only direct reading?

You can cover maybe 60-70% of client questions. But when someone asks 'how do I fix this' — and they will — you hit a wall. Direct reading is a great front-end; Strength analysis is the back-end that completes the service.
