Judging Having vs. Losing the Month's Command
The month isn't governed by one element the whole time — check who's on duty
Having the Month's Command (dé lìng, 得令) vs. losing it (shī lìng, 失令) is the first gate of Strength judgment. Dé lìng = the Day Master's element is in its birth/prosperity phase in the month, getting seasonal force boost. Shī lìng = the Day Master's element is in retreat/death phase. But there's a finer layer: the Hidden Stem Duty Roster (rén yuán sī lìng fēn yě, 人元司令分野). A month-branch isn't ruled by one element for the whole month — each month splits into three segments of roughly ten days each, with a different 'duty commander' (sī lìng, 司令) on duty. A jiǎ Wood Day Master born in yín month gets the strongest dé lìng only if born in the early segment when jiǎ Wood itself commands.
Dé lìng = month-branch supports the Day Master (at least 50% base strength). Shī lìng = month-branch controls/drains/consumes the Day Master. The Hidden Stem Duty Roster splits each month into three duty periods — if the duty commander supports the DM, bonus. If it controls the DM, penalty. Dé lìng and dé shì (having momentum) aren't the same — one's prestige, the other's real muscle.
1. Month-branch support levels for the Day Master
Dé lìng gradations. Month-branch and Day Master are the same element (jiǎ DM in yín or mǎo month) = strongest dé lìng. Month-branch produces the Day Master (jiǎ DM in hài or zǐ month) = strong dé lìng — Seal star commanding produces the DM. Month-branch shares Five Element but different yin-yang (jiǎ DM in mǎo month, mǎo is yin Wood) = still strong. Shī lìng gradations. Month-branch controls the Day Master (jiǎ DM in shēn or yǒu month) = strongest shī lìng — Officer/Killing commanding and controlling. Month-branch drains the Day Master (jiǎ DM in sì or wǔ month) = strong shī lìng — Output commanding and draining. Month-branch consumes the Day Master (jiǎ DM in chén, xū, chǒu, wèi month) = moderate shī lìng — Wealth star commanding and consuming. Also check clash/combination status of the month-branch — if clashed, dé lìng effect weakens.
2. Hidden Stem Duty Roster — the shift schedule inside each month
The Duty Roster divides each month into three segments. Yín month: early segment jiǎ Wood commands, middle segment bǐng Fire commands, late segment wù Earth commands. Mǎo month: yǐ Wood throughout (no subdivision). Chén month: early yǐ Wood, middle guǐ Water, late wù Earth. Sì month: early wù Earth, middle gēng Metal, late bǐng Fire. Wǔ month: early bǐng Fire, middle jǐ Earth, late dīng Fire. Wèi month: early dīng Fire, middle yǐ Wood, late jǐ Earth. Shēn month: early wù Earth, middle rén Water, late gēng Metal. Yǒu month: gēng Metal → xīn Metal. Xū month: early xīn Metal, middle dīng Fire, late wù Earth. Hài month: early wù Earth, middle jiǎ Wood, late rén Water. Zǐ month: rén Water → guǐ Water. Chǒu month: early guǐ Water, middle xīn Metal, late jǐ Earth. The Duty Roster is a fine-tuning tool in Strength judgment: duty commander supports the DM = bonus points. Duty commander controls the DM = penalty points.
3. Dé lìng and dé shì are not the same thing
Dé lìng (month-branch support) ≠ dé shì (overall chart momentum). Dé lìng without dé shì is common — the month-branch supports the DM, but the other three pillars are all Wealth/Officer/Output, draining and controlling. This state is 'you've got the platform but no troops' — the month gives you face but the rest of the chart gives you nothing. Dé shì without dé lìng also exists — month-branch is the controlling/draining side, but all other pillars are Resource/Companion. This state is 'hidden foundation, surface suppression.' Strength judgment requires both the month-branch and the full chart — never read one in isolation.
4. When the month-branch is clashed — what happens to dé lìng?
Month-branch clash (yuè lìng féng chōng, 月令逢冲) cuts dé lìng effectiveness by 30-50%. A jiǎ DM in yín month normally gets strong seasonal support. Yín clashed by shēn — the support foundation shakes. The DM still 'has' the month nominally, but the actual force transmission is compromised. The clash creates a structural crack in what should be the chart's strongest pillar. If the month-branch is also combined away (hé, 合), dé lìng effect can drop further — the month's element is busy combining with something else and can't focus on supporting the DM.

- Map the birth date to the duty segment: Check which segment of the month the birth date falls in — early, middle, or late. Identify the current duty commander. Commander supports the DM = month-branch power maximized. Commander controls the DM = month-branch support gets discounted.
- Dé lìng isn't the whole story: Don't see dé lìng and immediately pronounce 'strong.' Still need to check roots and overall support/control ratios. And don't see shī lìng and instantly declare 'weak' — if the full chart's Resource/Companion has formed momentum, shī lìng can still be strong.

Q:Does the Duty Roster still matter in modern Bazi practice?
A:
It's a bonus/penalty item, not the main judgment. In most modern cases, the month-branch's overall Five Element character is sufficient. The Duty Roster is for fine-grained judgment — especially when the dé lìng / shī lìng question sits on a borderline.
Q:What if I can't determine the exact birth date segment?
A:
Use the month-branch's primary element and move on. The Duty Roster is refinement, not a prerequisite. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
