Month Branch Under Attack — How Much Power Does It Lose?

The Month Branch (月令 yuè lìng, the chart's command center) controls 50% of baseline power. But what happens when it gets clashed, suppressed, or combined without transformation? This guide quantifies the power loss and the pattern downgrade.

Month Branch Under Attack: Power Loss and Pattern Downgrade

The command center got hit — can it still give orders?

The Month Branch (月令 yuè lìng) — aka the Outline (提纲 tí gāng) — governs roughly 50% of the chart's baseline power. It's the command center. But it's not invincible. Three kinds of attack: Clashed (冲 chōng) — the Month Branch's opposite-direction branch sits elsewhere in the chart and directly crashes into it. Power loss: 30-50%. Suppressed (克 kè) — the Month Branch's main qi is concretely suppressed by another strong position. Power loss: 20-30%. Combined without transformation (合而不化 hé ér bù huà) — the Month Branch is pulled into a combination but doesn't transform into a new element. Power loss: 10-20%. After attack, the pattern (格局 gé jú) formed from Month Branch must be downgraded — a high-level pattern becomes mid-level, a mid-level becomes borderline.

Month Branch attacked three ways: Clash (30-50% power loss, worst), Suppression (20-30%, chronic), Unresolved Combination (10-20%, distraction). Pattern downgrades accordingly. Clash is the most destructive. Luck Cycle can lift the attack — temporary recovery.

1. Clash on the Month Branch — frontal assault

Month Branch clash is the worst structural hit in Bazi. Zi Month clashed by Wu, Wu Month clashed by Zi, etc. — direct opposite-direction impact. The Month Branch's element force gets chopped by 30-50%. If that Month Branch was the chart's Useful God or pattern anchor, the entire structure wobbles. Timing: if the natal chart has a Month Branch clash but no triggering annual pillar yet, wait for the annual pillar that repeats the clash — that year, everything the clash promised activates at once. If the clashing branch is weak (no root, suppressed elsewhere), the Month Branch is damaged but still functional. If the clashing branch is strong and persistent (multiple appearances, rooted, backed by Luck Cycle), the Month Branch loses authority for an extended period.

2. Suppression and combination — firepower suppression and divided attention

Suppression (克 kè): a strong position (Heavenly Stem or dominant hidden stem) directly suppresses the Month Branch's main qi. This isn't a one-time blast like clash — it's chronic erosion. The Month Branch doesn't 'lose control' like under clash; it 'can't get its orders executed.' Subordinates (other branches) stop listening fully. Unresolved combination (合而不化 hé ér bù huà): the Month Branch is combined with another branch but the transformation into a new element fails. The Month Branch's energy is drained by a relationship that produces nothing. Power loss is smallest (10-20%) but persistent — like a slow leak. The chart runs at reduced efficiency.

3. Power-loss scoring and pattern downgrade

Practical scoring: Clash = -3 points. Suppression = -2 points. Unresolved combination = -1 point. Start the Month Branch at full score (10). Subtract. Score 7+ = Month Branch still dominant, pattern holds at original level. Score 5-6 = pattern downgrades one tier (high→mid, mid→low). Score 3-4 = Month Branch mostly ineffective — pattern must be judged from other chart positions. Score below 3 = Month Branch effectively offline — find the next-strongest branch as the 'acting command center' (就地取材 jiù dì qǔ cái). Multiple attacks stack: clash + suppression = -5, close to offline.

4. Luck Cycle recovery — when the attack lifts

When a Luck Cycle or annual pillar lifts the attack, the Month Branch temporarily regains authority. Clash lifted by combination (the clashing branch gets combined away). Suppression lifted by passage element (通关 tōng guān — a third element that drains the suppressor and feeds the Month Branch). Unresolved combination resolved (transformation conditions finally met). During recovery windows, the pattern temporarily regains its original tier. These windows are when people with attacked Month Branches can accomplish things that seem 'above their normal capacity.' Flag them and plan around them.

5. When the Month Branch goes fully offline

If the Month Branch is too damaged (score ≤3) and no recovery window is coming soon, switch judgment mode. Find the strongest other branch in the chart — the one with the most structural support, strongest root network, least suppression. Use that as the provisional Month Branch for pattern judgment. This is 'outline lost, rebuild from local materials' (提纲失而就地取材 tí gāng shī ér jiù dì qǔ cái). The pattern built from the substitute is always one tier lower than what the original Month Branch would have produced — but it's accurate for the chart as it actually functions.

Practical Application

  • Score the Month Branch: Clash = -3, Suppression = -2, Unresolved Combination = -1. Score 7+ = fine. 5-6 = downgrade one tier. 3-4 = mostly offline. Below 3 = find a substitute branch. Run this first, then judge the pattern.
  • Map the recovery windows: For each attack type, identify which Luck Cycles or annual pillars lift it. Clash lifted by combination. Suppression lifted by passage. Combination resolved by transformation conditions. Mark those windows — they're when you can operate at full capacity.
  • Find the substitute command center: If the Month Branch is offline (score ≤3), identify the strongest remaining branch. Check: which branch has the most root support? Which is least suppressed? Which sits in the Day or Hour Pillar (closer to self)? That branch becomes your provisional pattern anchor. Read the chart from there.

Follow-up Questions

Q:What if the Month Branch is completely offline?

A:

Switch to the next-strongest branch as your reference point. The substitute won't give you the full pattern tier — downgrade one level from whatever pattern that branch would produce. But it's more accurate than reading from a dead Month Branch. This is standard procedure in high-level reading.

Q:Can a Month Branch be attacked by multiple things at once?

A:

Yes. Clash + suppression = -5. Clash + unresolved combination = -4. These compound. A Month Branch under multiple attacks is effectively offline unless a Luck Cycle rescues it. In these charts, the pattern is always read from a substitute.

Q:Does a Luck Cycle that clashes the Month Branch temporarily count as an attack?

A:

Yes — even if the natal chart's Month Branch is untouched, a Luck Cycle clash temporarily attacks it. During that cycle, the pattern downgrades for the duration. But the recovery is automatic when the cycle ends (unless the clashing branch lingers through an annual pillar extension).
