Ku vs. Mu: Storehouse or Tomb?
Same Chen branch — wealth storehouse or wealth tomb? The answer changes everything
Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei — the four earth branches — function as both ku (库, 'storehouse') and mu (墓, 'tomb'). A storehouse collects and preserves energy. A tomb buries and entombs it. Chen is the Water storehouse/tomb — whether Water enters Chen as stored treasure or buried corpse depends entirely on Water's strength. Strong Water → Chen is a reservoir (蓄存), open it and wealth pours out. Weak Water → Chen is a grave (埋葬), open it and you release a dead thing. For wealth: strong Wealth star → Chen is a wealth storehouse (money saved up). Weak Wealth star → Chen is a wealth tomb (money buried and lost). Storehouse loves clash (冲开库门 — smash the door open and grab what's inside). Tomb fears clash (冲坟毁墓 — smash the grave and disaster follows).
Judge ku vs. mu by one criterion: the strength of the element being stored. Strong = storehouse (good, open it). Weak = tomb (bad, leave it shut). Storehouse welcomes clash. Tomb fears clash.

Practical Application
- Judge strength first, then label: When you see Chen/Xu/Chou/Wei, ask: which element is being stored? Is it strong or weak? Strong = storehouse, weak = tomb. Never reverse the order — don't pre-label 'Chen is Water storehouse' and then go looking for Water. Look at Water's strength first.
- Clash storehouse vs. clash tomb — opposite outcomes: Same Chen-Xu clash produces opposite results on different charts. On one person it opens wealth. On another it triggers disaster. The difference is storehouse vs. tomb. Strict separation in reading is non-negotiable.
- Combination opens storehouses too: Clash isn't the only way. Combination (合) also opens storehouses — just more slowly. Chen-You combination (辰酉合) gradually opens Chen. The speed differs but the mechanism is the same.
Follow-up Questions
Q:Can a Chen/Xu/Chou/Wei branch be a storehouse and a tomb simultaneously?
A:
For different elements, yes. A single Chen might be Water's storehouse (Water strong) while having no relationship to Wood storage at all. But Chen can only be one thing for Water — either storehouse or tomb, not both. The judgment is element-specific.
Q:Is Month Pillar Chen/Xu/Chou/Wei more important than other pillars?
A:
Yes — the Month Pillar carries roughly 50% of the chart's baseline force. A Month-Branch storehouse or tomb has outsized influence on the entire life structure. Other pillars' storehouses/tombs are secondary.
Q:What if there's no clash or combination to open the storehouse?
A:
A locked storehouse means the resources are there but inaccessible — like inheritance trapped in legal limbo. Wait for a Luck Cycle that clashes or combines with it. Until then, the stored element provides passive, background-level support at best.
